Romantic location in the centre of the old salt town
It is the quiet and beautiful location at the old Ilmenau harbour
which makes the Bergström so unique. From here the sights
of our 1000-year-old town are easily reached on foot.
Cobbled pavements invite you to explore the past and to take a
leisurely stroll through the town center. Today the gabled roofs
shelter attractive boutiques, traditional restaurants and –
this is what Lüneburg is also famous for! – a number
of quaint pubs.
We have some recommendations and collected a few tips which we would love to
share with you.

Guided Lüneburg tours
We gladly make your reservation for interesting guided tours: visit historical
courtyards or accompany famous Lüneburg citizens through their town, go
on an evening tour with the Lüneburg city guards or – an insider
tip – follow the night watchman and his wife. Or maybe you would prefer
a carriage ride through the town center?
Town hall
Approx. 500 years old, Lüneburg’s town hall is one of the most beautiful
historical buildings in Northern Germany. The magnificent building is –
so to speak – a stone chronicle of the town’s history. Different
and originally separate sections of the building grew together in the course
of time to form a unique ensemble. The oldest parts date as far back as 1200.
The eastern side facing the market square was built at the beginning of the
18th century and is crowned by a seemingly delicate tower with chimes made of
Meissen china.
Water tower
The water tower is one of the most impressive examples of early industrial architecture
in Lüneburg. It was built in 1906/7 on the remains of the medieval ramparts.
German salt museum
A visit to the German salt museum is really worthwhile. It was built on the
site of the former salt works where salt was mined from 956 until 1976. Experience
history and view 230 million year-old rock salt, follow the ancient salt roads
and watch the boiling of salt in old lead pans.
Leisure activities in and around Lüneburg
Hiking and biking at the Lüneburg Heather
Keen cyclists find everything they could wish for in the lovely countryside
between the river Elbe and the famous Lüneburg Heather: unspoilt nature,
good roads and signposting, plenty of interesting sights, a great variety of
restaurants and accommodation suitable for cyclers’ needs. Highlights
of the region are the largest heath area in Europe, the natural preserve “Elbtalaue”
and many attractive towns and villages located in the heath. To go hiking in
Lüneburg surroundings is to relax and enjoy both nature and culture. If
you like, we will put together the most beautiful routes in the heath, Lüneburg’s
surroundings and the “Elbtalaue” for you.
Golf
Another highlight of the area is golf. Players of different handicaps have the
choice between 7 first-class golf courses and beautiful natural courses.
Boat trips:
The region offers plenty of opportunities for boat rides. Discover the countryside
by boat either on the river Ilmenau, the river Elbe or the “Elbe-Seiten”
canal. The canal-lift in Scharnebeck – the biggest in Germany –
is a special attraction. Rent a canoe, a rowing or a pedalo boat and enjoy untouched
heath countryside, lush fens along the Elbe – the river will lead you
to the most attractive sites in Lüneburg’s surroundings.
Lüneburg’s thermal baths
Lüneburg’s thermal baths are still supplied with 4% salt water and
in summer outdoor swimming pools
Horse & carriage rides
The varied countryside round Lüneburg with its low traffic-density is especially
suited for relaxing horse rides. There are numerous pony stables with special
holiday offers for children as well as carriage rides and select high-quality
sports events for professional riders. One of the highlights in our area is
the well-known course in Luhmühlen where the German and European championships
in Military take place.
By bike or by car
The newly opened center for safe driving in Lüneburg is one of the most
modern centers in Europe. The comprehensive program offers training for car
